373: [Formed.] Dr. Craig Keener on Self-Centered Spirituality, How to Read Scripture Well, and Blowing Up Our Understanding of Favorite Bible Verses

Podcast · January 17, 2024

It’s week three of [Formed.] and one of the foremost biblical scholars in the world, Dr. Craig Keener, joins us to talk about self-centered spirituality and how to read the Scripture well. We will also debunk our understanding and application of a few of our favorite Bible verses. Of course, if you missed the first two weeks of [Formed.], featuring Craig Cooney and Father Ronald Rolheiser, go back and catch those episodes on your podcast feed or YouTube.

Guest Bio:

Craig Keener (PhD, Duke University) is a professor of New Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary. Six of his many books have won national awards, and his books together have sold more than one million copies. His books include heavily academic works (such as his four-volume Acts commentary) and popular ones (such as The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament). He has published roughly one hundred academic articles and over a hundred popular-level articles.

Healing What You Can’t Erase – My NEW BOOK!

I’m thrilled to tell you about my new book, Healing What You Can’t Erase: Transform Your Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Health from the Inside Out, available everywhere books are sold on March 19, 2024.

In Healing What You Can’t Erase, I leverage my personal story of adversity, loss, and healing to teach you how to forge your roadmap to wholeness from the inside out. This path doesn’t rely on willpower, self-help, or self-healing, but rather the daily transformative power of the Holy Spirit engaged with principles of neuroscience, psychology, and Scripture. While the pain-filled memories from our past can’t be erased, we can experience psychological, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing that lasts.

Pre-orders will begin in January, but my publisher has graciously made a sneak peek of the book available to you immediately. Go to HealingWhatYouCantErase.com right now to sign up and receive a FREE sneak peek of the book before it hits stores in March.

Key Quotes from the Episode

Biblical faith is not a leap in the dark. It’s a deliberate step in the light of God’s truth. It’s not believing something that is false. It’s believing something that’s true.

A hundred million years from now, it’s not going to matter how much money we made or what honors people gave to us. What matters is our relationship with the Lord and the difference we were able to make in light of eternity.

You can study Scripture academically and still not believe it. You can study Scripture academically and still not live it. But we must absolutely embrace Scripture in faith.

If we really embrace the Scripture with our hearts and we really love God’s Word, it’s a matter of embracing the message and saying, “This is right. This is what God wants for us, and we want to please Him.”

Are we going from the Scripture to today or are we bringing today’s questions to the Scriptures? Both are legitimate, but if we’re doing the latter, we need to make sure we’re being faithful to what the scriptures are actually saying.

The immediate literary context, what’s already there in the text itself, makes a huge difference in how we understand the Scripture. God didn’t give us the Bible one verse at a time. So when we read, we have to read in context.

We all say we believe in context, but how often we quote verses we’ve heard out of context. And so if we study the Bible in a more disciplined way, just working through text after text, we will hear it more in its intended context.

It’s good to have faith in Scripture, but faith is only as good as its object. But if you’re trusting a scripture out of context, the basis of your trust is fallacious.
