374: [Formed.] Jamie Winship on Why Separation Creates Suffering, The Necessary Practice of Self-Emptying, and a Right View of God

Podcast · January 24, 2024

It’s week four of [Formed.], and one of our favorite people is back on the podcast: Jamie Winship. This week, Jamie talks to us about why separation creates suffering, the necessary practice of self-emptying according to Jesus’s teaching in Matthew 5, how to develop a right view of God, and a brilliant concept called “closed-handed anxiety.” As usual, it’s a fascinating conversation, so prepare for some note-taking. And of course, if you missed the first three weeks of [Formed.], go back and catch those episodes on your podcast feed or YouTube.

Guest Bio:

Jamie Winship has decades of experience bringing peaceful solutions to areas of the world that experience the highest levels of conflict. After a distinguished career in law enforcement in the metro Washington DC area, Jamie had a unique opportunity to bring his identity-centric approach to transformation to the field of education. Jamie developed a unique language acquisition program based on this premise: identity transformation is the key to acquiring new levels of learning in any field. His work drew the attention of Fulbright and other educational institutions which extended his work worldwide over the past several decades. Jamie has worked with leaders in professional sports, business, education, law enforcement, government, non-profit, and other sectors. Jamie and his wife, Donna, are co-founders of Identity Exchange, a training and consulting agency that helps individuals and teams discover new levels of creativity and resiliency within the framework of true identity.

Key Quotes from the Episode

If you have a right view of God, then you can form a right view of yourself. And if you have a right view of yourself you can form a right view of others.

Jesus is the exact representation of the invisible God. When we see Jesus, we are seeing God. And the astounding thing is that God is like Jesus.

Where there is a scarcity mindset, we must pursue certainty which leads to a pursuit of perfectionism which leads to a life of self-focus. And in so doing, our default response to life is to either self-protect or self-promote.

You have to get empty of everything that is weighing you down because our first instinct in life is to have to have closed-handed anxiety because I am in constant fear of not having enough.

You can tell when you’ve taken unnecessary burdens and responsibilities upon yourself when you lose your joy.

Pray this: “Lord, what in me prevents me from receiving what You have for me or how You want me to think about things. What prevents me from having the eyes You have for this situation?”

A scarcity mindset driven by a need for certainty, fueled by perfectionism, expressed as self-protection and self-promotion, cannot see real opportunities in life.

Healing What You Can’t Erase – My NEW BOOK!

I’m thrilled to tell you about my new book, Healing What You Can’t Erase: Transform Your Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Health from the Inside Out, available everywhere books are sold on March 19, 2024.

In Healing What You Can’t Erase, I leverage my personal story of adversity, loss, and healing to teach you how to forge your roadmap to wholeness from the inside out. This path doesn’t rely on willpower, self-help, or self-healing, but rather the daily transformative power of the Holy Spirit engaged with principles of neuroscience, psychology, and Scripture. While the pain-filled memories from our past can’t be erased, we can experience psychological, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing that lasts.

Pre-orders will begin in January, but my publisher has graciously made a sneak peek of the book available to you immediately. Go to HealingWhatYouCantErase.com right now to sign up and receive a FREE sneak peek of the book before it hits stores in March.
