397: Lee Cummings on Why Self-Deception is the Worst Kind of Deception, Why Fear is a Vacuum, and Why Facts and Truth Aren’t the Same Thing

Podcast · June 14, 2024

Lee Cummings is back and this week, we’re talking about why self-deception is the worst kind of deception, why fear is a vacuum to suffocate our potential, and why facts and truth aren’t the same thing. You see, the greatest challenge you and I face, according to Lee, is staying awake in this present cultural moment of chaos. And so if the enemy can’t lull you into spiritual apathy, deception is often his weapon of choice against you. And if he can deceive you, he can keep you from living out your purpose—God’s purpose for your life.

Guest Bio

Lee Cummings is the founding and senior leader of Radiant Church, a multi-site church reaching the globe via Radiant Church locations and online. In addition to his role at Radiant, he is a mentor to many next-generation leaders and church planters, and he has also authored several books.

Self-Reflection Questions

  1. Have I fallen into routines or mindsets that prevent me from actively seeking God’s will? It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and let our spiritual lives fall by the wayside. This week’s episode can be a wake-up call to examine our routines and see if they nourish or drain our faith. Are we dedicating time to effective spiritual formation? Remember that we are being formed all of the time. Therefore, we have to be intentional about our discipleship and spiritual growth. Use this reflection to reignite our passion for God and actively seek His will in our lives.
  2. Can you think of a recent instance where you might have deceived yourself about a situation or your motives? Take some time to consider a recent situation. Were your actions driven by pure intentions, or was there a hidden motive at play? Did you downplay the impact of your words or actions? By acknowledging these potential blind spots, we open ourselves up to growth and transformation.
  3. How can I ensure that I am basing my decisions on God’s truth, not just readily available information? These days, we’re bombarded with facts and opinions from all sides. It can be overwhelming to discern what’s true and what’s simply noise. We can develop a healthy skepticism toward the sources of information we receive and align ourselves with God’s ultimate truth. Do we readily accept everything we hear at face value, or do we take time to evaluate the source and its alignment with Scripture? Are there trusted mentors or resources we can turn to for guidance in discerning truth? By actively seeking God’s truth and cultivating a discerning spirit, we can make informed decisions that reflect our faith and values.
